Size, Capability, Efficiency, Style: The Ford Edge

Crossover vehicles are very popular because they offer the size and capability of a traditional SUV in a more efficient and stylish package.

Two of these kind of vehicle are the Ford Edge and the Toyota Venza and they both offer roomy interiors and all-wheel drive systems.

The Edge gets 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway and the Venza gets 20 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. How can the larger engine on the Edge offer comparable fuel economy? It’s all thanks to sophisticated engineering.

You might think with the similar price and fuel economy rating, the two would also have similar engines. But in actuality, the 2014 Ford Edge offers a standard V-6 engine, while the Venza comes with only a 4-cylinder. That’s over 100 horsepower more for the Edge, and also results in the trailer weight capacity being doubled.

The Edge comes in four trims, starting with the SE and going up to the top-of-the-line Sport. There are three engines to choose from: a 3.5-liter, 285-horsepower V6, a 2-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder making 240 horsepower, and a 3.7-liter, 305-horsepower V6. The Ecoboost engine gets up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Like the Toyota, the Edge is available in front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The interior is roomy and well-appointed with a classy dashboard with available wood trim.

Neither vehicle is a rock-climbing off-roader, but the Edge has the advantage when it comes to off-road credibility. The Venza looks and feels more like a large wagon than a mid-size Sport Utility Vehicle.
